How Does Diagnostic Imaging Work?
The differences between a CT scan and MRI lie in the types of images scanned and the methods used for assessment. During an MRI scan, you'll lie on a table that slides into a tube-shaped machine. The MRI scan process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Strong magnetic fields and radio waves create detailed pictures, particularly of soft tissues, such as muscles, nerves, and the brain. For a CT scan, the process is even quicker. A typical CT scan lasts about 10 – 20 minutes. This procedure uses x-rays to quickly capture cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels, and internal organs.
